The Hidden Cost of AI-Driven Development 

AI can generate code, workflows and application components at unprecedented speed. The research, however, tells a more nuanced story than the tooling vendors do.

McKinsey’s analysis of nearly 300 publicly traded companies found that only a top quintile of organisations achieves substantial gains from AI in software development: improvements of 16 to 30 percent in productivity and time to market, and 31 to 45 percent in software quality. Their key insight: simply giving developers AI tools does not meaningfully move the needle; value comes from rearchitecting how software is built. McKinsey’s earlier lab research points in the same direction: productivity gains shrank to under 10 percent on complex tasks, and junior developers were in some cases slower with AI tools than without them.

Research published in MIT Sloan Management Review adds a warning that will resonate with any IT leader managing a legacy estate: AI-assisted changes to existing systems can propagate defects already present in the code base, quietly increasing technical debt unless organisations deliberately allocate time and governance to retire it.

Where Low-Code Is Not the Answer

A governed low-code platform is not the right choice for every situation and we tell our customers where Low-code is not the right solution:

Highly specialised algorithmic systems like trading engines, scientific computing, embedded software, are usually better served by traditional engineering.

Extreme-scale consumer platforms with millions of concurrent users and micro-optimised performance requirements sit outside the typical low-code sweet spot.

Organisations unwilling to invest in governance will not be saved by a platform. Without architectural ownership, standards and a Centre of Excellence, low-code simply produces technical debt faster. In fact the same trap as ungoverned AI coding.
