OutSystems goes for massive productivity through continuous change

OutSystems is completely redesigning its platform for low-code software development. Under the name Project Neo, OutSystems promises a low-code foundation for application development, containerization with Kubernetes, and large-scale deployments in the cloud. The preview of Project Neo is now available. The official release of the new platform will follow in 2022.

OutSystems architected the new platform from the ground up. Project Neo aims to directly solve the most pressing challenges facing businesses today: managing constant change, dealing with software-development talent shortages, and the endless need to modernize. It combines the productivity benefits of visual, model-based development with a state-of-the-art container- and Kubernetes-based cloud architecture, hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS). As a result, any company using Project Neo will be able to build custom cloud apps capable of scaling globally and continual change.

The current OutSystems 11 is based on an integrated development environment. It includes various tools for developing, maintaining, and releasing OutSystems applications. Project Neo replaces all of that with one central environment in which all information related to developing and managing the application comes together. The developer no longer has to search for the right information but sees everything in a dashboard. This is of course useful for the experienced developer, but it also lowers the threshold for the developer who wants to start with OutSystems.

Any app at internet scale

Project Neo is breaking the boundaries of traditional software development, OutSystems says. OutSystems’ goal isn’t exactly modest: the platform allows any development team to build any app at internet scale. Developers should be the artisans of innovation in their organization, argues OutSystems, but they’re often mired in complexity that stifles their ability to innovate and differentiate. Instead of using their talents to fix, change, and maintain code and aging systems, they can unleash their creativity on the business and achieve massive competitive advantage through continuous change, thanks to the tools OutSystems offers them.

Project Neo wants to make this possible by making the most of automation. Handling the critical but undifferentiated aspects of development — that’s what it’s all about. Project Neo frees developers to focus on code that delivers innovation and competitive advantage as it automates DevOps processes, manages an advanced cloud runtime, auto-documents code, resolves code dependencies, performs regression testing, enforces architecture standards, continuously adds new platform features, and much more besides. It also enables developers to make critical changes to applications within hours rather than days or weeks.

Democratizing development

This high degree of automation has the same effect as adding extra elite developers to a team, says OutSystems. Above all, OutSystems aims to democratize development, allowing companies to build platforms that combine containers and Kubernetes with state-of-the-art cloud technologies — such as serverless, database autoscaling, and event and messaging-based orchestration. This allows companies to shift faster from legacy applications to the cloud, with new, more strategic applications, and advance their digital transformation ambitions with even more conviction.

The official launch of the platform will take place in 2022. The current OutSystems 11 platform will also remain available. OutSystems has already committed to continue investing in OutSystems 11.
